Welcome to HagmarksMISTRA!

HagmarksMISTRA is a broad interdisciplinary research programme financed by MISTRA (The Foundation for Strategic Environmental Research) with the Swedish Biodiversity Centre (CBM) as programme coordinator.

The main goal for the research programme is to promote sustainable farming systems for different kinds of seminatural grasslands. The use of seminatural grasslands for haymaking and grazing over many generations has resulted in very high biodiversity and seminatural grasslands are among the most species-rich landscapes in Sweden. However, due to the decreasing number of farms with grazing animals, many farmland species and declining in numbers, some are even extinct. Other factors like eutrophication, fragmentation of grassland habitats, lack of continuity of management regimes, allowance systems and public opinions also influence the biodiversity of grasslands.

HagmarksMISTRA synthesises new knowledge obtained in the programme with practical experiences and other research results in order to establish systems that are both economically and ecologically sustainable. It acts as a catalyst for co-operation between practical management of biodiversity and cultural heritage, agricultural policy and different research disciplines. The progress of the research programme will be continuously reported to different authorities, researchers, and others who are interested in these questions. Thus, the work involving information of the programme is prioritised.
